National Cat Health Month

February is National Cat Health Month! Although cats are quite easy to care for, they aren’t quite as independent as they would like us to think. In fact, Fluffy needs quite a bit of TLC to truly thrive. Read on as a local Tampa, FL vet offers tips on keeping your kitty in good health.

Good Food

A good diet is a crucial aspect of your feline friend’s care regimen. Offer Fluffy the best food you can afford, but don’t overindulge her. If your kitty overeats, she may become obese. This would be very bad for her health! Ask your vet for specific nutritional recommendations.

Toys and Entertainment

Kitties are quite curious and active by nature, so you’ll need to offer your pet some ways to indulge her inner lioness. Offer Fluffy lots of toys, as well as at least one comfy window seat with a good view. Daily play sessions are also beneficial.

Purrs

Fluffy’s mental health has a huge effect on her physical well-being. Anxiety, loneliness, and fright can all take a toll on your kitty. Pay lots of attention to your feline pal! Talk to her, play with her, and, if she likes attention, pet her. This will help her feel loved and safe. If your furball is timid, provide her with lots of hidey-holes.

Litterbox

The fact that Fluffy will use a litterbox is definitely a great benefit. You’ll never have to rush home to walk your cat! Keep the litterbox clean by scooping it daily and changing the litter out every week.

Veterinary Care

Just like people, cats need to visit their doctors regularly for basic healthcare. We recommend that all kitties be microchipped, spayed or neutered. You’ll also need to stay current with Fluffy’s vaccinations, parasite control, exams, and dental care. Between appointments, watch for signs of sickness, such as reduced appetite, poor grooming, and/or hiding. Call your vet immediately if you notice anything amiss.

Safety

As you may have noticed, kitties are very, very good at getting themselves into mischief. Keep your furball safe and sound indoors! You may also want to do a bit of petproofing. Remove or secure anything Fluffy shouldn’t eat or play with, such as toxic plants, small and sharp objects, plastics, wires and cords, chemicals, and medication.
