Reasons To Adopt A Senior Pet

It’s Adopt A Senior Pet Month! Of course, as far as we’re concerned, every month should be Adopt A Senior Pet Month. While we love seeing any pet going to a great home, it’s extra great when older pets get second chances. A local Tampa, FL vet lists a few reasons to adopt a senior pet in this article.

They’re Adorable

Puppies and kittens are of course super cute. However, older pets are just as charming in their own way. There’s something heartwarming about seeing a sweet senior dog placidly following his owner around or dozing at his feet. And kitties in their senior years are often both very cute and very cuddly.

Prior Experience

Baby animals are adorable, fun, and entertaining. They’re also a lot of work! Fido needs quite a bit of petucation in order to learn how to be a good boy. And while Fluffy doesn’t need that much training, she certainly does have a talent for getting into mischief. Older pets usually already have an idea of what they should and shouldn’t do.

Less Destruction

Another great thing about older pets? They usually are well past that frisky toddler stage, and tend to be much calmer and better behaved than younger pets. Fido probably won’t be very interested in eating your shoes, while Fluffy would rather take a nap than climb the drapes.

Shorter Commitment

When you adopt any pet, you’re committing to providing that animal with love and care for the rest of their life. If you’re adopting a puppy or kitten, that can mean well over a decade of pet parenting! However, with a senior dog or cat, you don’t have to look as far ahead. That’s great for people who aren’t sure where they will be a few years down the road.

It Feels Great!

If you’re an animal lover, you understand how deep and profound the connections we make with our pets can be. Giving that one sweet dog or cat a last chance at happiness, and allowing them to live out their final days in a place where they feel loved, warm, and safe, can be a very rewarding and fulfilling experience. Many people find that the pets they have rescued have in turn helped them in some way.
