Slobbery Dogs

Is your canine buddy a bit of a drooler? You may want to get Fido a special treat for tomorrow: It’s Slobber Appreciation Day. (Yes, really.) Of course, it’s probably safe to say that most of you appreciate slobbery dogs more than the slobber itself. A local Tampa, FL vet discusses–you guessed it–doggy slobber below.

Drooly Dogs

Fido has some very adorable habits, such as wagging his tail and jumping for joy. He also has a few we could probably do without, such as slobbering. When it comes to slobbering, all dogs are definitely not created equal. The list of drooliest dogs includes the Basset Hound, Bulldog, Bloodhound, Boxer, Great Pyrenees, Labrador Retriever, Saint Bernard, and several types of mastiff.

When Dogs Drool

Fido may drool for many different reasons. He may slobber when he’s nervous, tired, scared, or uneasy, or if he is fixated on a yummy treat. Certain medical conditions can also cause your pup to drool, as can motion sickness. Your furry best buddy may also drool to cool himself down, or perhaps if he’s eaten something that isn’t agreeing with him. Of course, if you want to follow Pavlov’s footsteps, you can even train your canine pal to drool at the sound of a bell. (Note: we would advise against this.)

Warning Signs

As mentioned above, sometimes drool can be a sign of medical issues. For instance, excessive, ropy, or bloody drool can be indicative of doggy dental problems. Other medical issues that can cause drooling include heat stroke, distemper, hypersalivation, or ptyalism. Rabies, as you may know, can also cause excessive salivation. (Note: rabies is extremely dangerous to both people and pets. Keep up with Fido’s vaccinations!). Drooling can also be a sign of having ingested something toxic. If your pooch suddenly starts drooling heavily, and you aren’t sure why, contact your vet.

Tips

Unfortunately, we don’t have any tricks or hacks to stop slobbery dogs from drooling. However, it is important to have your pup examined, to rule out any medical and dental issues. Your canine buddy should also have plenty of fresh water and suitable chew toys available at all times. Aside from that, you may just need to occasionally remind yourself that Fido’s love, loyalty, and friendship all greatly outweigh the occasional puddle.
