Does your canine buddy race across the room whenever you open a food wrapper? Does Fido stare at you the whole time you’re eating, with that impossibly cute sad look that is so effective on us? It can also be dangerous, as your pooch could convince somebody to give him something that isn’t safe for him. Here, a Tampa, FL vet discusses teaching dogs not to beg.

Tell Him Not To Beg

Not everything about dog behavior has to be complicated. Simply tell your furry little actor not to beg! You can say ‘No’ or ‘Don’t beg’ or ‘Not your food.’ It really doesn’t matter, as long as you are consistent and use the same phrase every time.

Food Schedule

Fido is much more likely to beg if he’s actually hungry. Feed him at the same time you eat. Also, ask your vet for tips on portion sizes. You’ll be less likely to feel guilty if you know your four-legged friend is eating exactly what he should be.

Don’t Give In

Dogs are absolute masters at pulling our heartstrings. It isn’t always easy to say no to Fido when he’s being extra adorable. Don’t fall for it! If you reward your canine pal for begging, even just once in a while, you’re essentially encouraging him to keep doing it.

Go Lay Down

All dogs should know basic obedience commands, like Sit, Stay, and Lay Down. If Fido won’t leave the area where you’re eating, have him go Lay Down.

Put Him In Another Area

Put Fido in his crate or in another room as you’re eating. If you have a yard, you can also put Fido outside, assuming the weather is nice. Give your pooch a puzzle toy to entertain himself with.

The Old Swaparoo

If you absolutely can’t help falling for that adorable furry face, pull a bait-and-switch on your theatrical pet. Give Fido a carrot stick, instead of that hot dog he wants. At least your canine companion will be getting something healthy!
