Tips For Walking a Senior Dog

Is your canine pal in or near his golden years? It’s both adorable and bittersweet to watch your furry best friend growing older. Fido will go through some changes as he ages, just as we all do. However, one thing that won’t change is the fact that your adorable pet will still need regular walks. Read on as a local Tampa, FL vet offers tips on walking a senior dog.

Paw Care

Younger dogs often wear their nails down by running around. Since older dogs aren’t as active, their claws can easily get too long. This is very uncomfortable for Fido, and actually puts a lot of strain on his bones and joints. Keep your canine buddy’s claws trimmed. You’ll also want to protect your pup’s furry feet from searing-hot tar and asphalt. Stick to soft dirt and grass as much as possible, and use paw balm on Fido’s sensitive paw pads.

Heat

Florida summers can be beautiful, but they definitely are not mild. When it’s really hot out, limit your dog’s outdoor time. It’s sometimes a little cooler in the mornings or evenings, especially after it rains. Try to walk your pooch then, instead of in the middle of the day. Also, keep in mind that older dogs don’t tolerate heat as well as their younger counterparts. Keep Fido indoors, in climate controlled rooms, as much as possible.

Incontinence

It isn’t uncommon for senior dogs to become incontinent. Your four-legged friend may need more frequent, shorter walks. Don’t punish Fido for having an accident: he probably couldn’t help it, and may very well be embarrassed.

Water

Make sure that Fido always has plenty of water. You may want to fill his bowl before you take him out, so he’ll have fresh, clean water to come back to.

Fatigue

Be careful not to overexert your canine friend. Exercise is great for dogs, but you don’t want to overdo it. Keep a close eye on Fido, and bring him in when he starts to seem tired.

Enjoy

Going for a walk with your furry best friend may very well turn out to be your favorite part of the day. Enjoy this special and beautiful time with your loyal pet!
