Helping a Senior Dog Adjust

November is Adopt A Senior Dog Month! Dogs in their golden years make truly wonderful pets. However, they often have a hard time getting adopted. If you’ve decided to give one lucky pup a great retirement home, you definitely have our support! Here, a Tampa, FL vet offers some tips on getting Fido settled.

Senior-friendly Facilities

Make sure you have everything ready for Fido before you bring him home. Keep your furry buddy’s age in mind when you go shopping. A thick, comfy bed is a must. (Get one with a washable cover, in case your pooch has accidents.) Your canine friend may also appreciate things like raised dishes and pet ramps or stairs. You’ll also want to pick up a few toys. Choose ones that were made specifically for older dogs. These are often softer on pups’ mouths. Some may also make noise or light up, so they’ll be easier for him to track.

Veterinary Care

One of the first things you’ll want to do is introduce Fido to his new doctor. Most senior dogs will already be fixed, but you’ll want to make sure he’s microchipped and current on vaccines and parasite control. Your pooch will also need a thorough exam, including a dental check. This is a great time to get some advice on your dog’s diet or care needs!

Petproofing

Petproofing for seniors is a bit different than petproofing for younger dogs. Fido probably won’t be too interested in eating the couch cushions, but he could fall down stairs or slip into the pool. Make sure your home is safe for your four-legged buddy! Take any health issues your pooch has into consideration. If Fido can’t see well, night lights and floor runners will help him get around, while baby gates can keep him out of unsafe areas.

A Peaceful Haven

Dogs are very emotional. Your canine companion may be depressed, upset, and/or confused by his experiences in a shelter. It may take him time to adjust and feel safe. Let him explore and settle in at his own pace. If your furry pal has any bad habits, address them firmly but gently. Be patient with Fido, and just enjoy getting to know him. Watching a sweet dog blossom with loving care is a beautiful experience!
