Summer Senior Dog Care

Summer is just around the corner! We probably don’t have to tell you that Tampa summers can get pretty hot. Those sweltering temperatures can also be tough on Fido, especially as he ages. Read on as a local Tampa, FL vet offers some tips on caring for an older dog in summer.

Water

Heat is a serious threat to dogs at this time of year. Fido is wearing a fur coat, and can’t easily cool himself off. Keeping your canine buddy hydrated is very important. You may want to set out more than one water bowl. Your pooch may also appreciate a pet fountain.

Grooming

Brushing your canine friend regularly will remove dead fur from his coat, which will help him stay cool and comfortable as the weather heats up. Some dogs will be more comfortable with a summer haircut. However, this isn’t an across-the-board recommendation. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Schedule

Walk and play with Fido in the mornings and evenings, when it’s at least a bit cooler out. Try to limit your dog’s outdoor time during the hottest part of the day. Keep your furry pal cool and comfy in rooms with climate control and/or fans.

Swimming

Taking a dip is a great way to cool off on hot days. Swimming is also great for many of our furry patients. If your four-legged friend enjoys the water, go ahead and indulge him. Just be sure to put your pup’s safety first. Never leave Fido unattended near water, and block pools off when they aren’t being used.

Water Fun

If you have a yard, you can also get a kiddie pool for your dog to splash around in, or let him play in the spray from a hose or sprinkler. (Note: we recommend getting a filter for your hose, especially if you use reclaimed water.)

Cool Bed

There are few things more heartmeltingly cute than a senior dog resting peacefully in his bed. Fido may appreciate a cooling pack or a frozen towel on his doggy bed when it’s really hot out.

Paw Care

Your canine companion can easily burn his paws on scorching tar or sand. Keep Fido’s claws clipped, and use paw balm or wax to protect those furry feet.
